We are now a few years into our renovations with nary an update. Up until now, I've been decidedly and frustratingly obsessed with the task list. And yet, there have been few changes. A recession, unexpected job changes, children and no free ride from dwell have resulted in slower than wanted progress. We've made some unsexy overhauls (roof, insulation, flooring, exterior painting) yawn.
There are a myriad of other things that need to be done (kitchen, basement, bathrooms, flooring throughout the house) and need to be done properly. But until finances and energy improve, we need to focus on smaller changes that are within time and budget constraints and provide a modicum of satisfaction. We made a breakthrough in terms of window treatments. We lost the seasick curtains in the dining/living rooms and made screens to cover the bottom half of the windows. Nice glow from the outside. Kind of fishbowly from the inside.
My father in law came this past weekend to install a garbage shelter that is to beautifully well-designed. He and I consulted on the concept - a shell to hide the garbage was pretty much my contribution to the project. He researched, trialed and errored and made decisons that included cedar material, hydro hinged lids and piano hinged doors. Measurements fit to a tee and custom fitting was done on the spot. Makes me wish all of our renovations could be done this way with such care and thought.
I think this is our latest bent - what can we do ourselves on a small scale and do well. I've been thinking of things like mosaics for the patio and quilts. I have ideas for design - now for the time.
I'd also thought that perhaps there could be a market for handcrafted items that have a modern bent and then I recalled Etsy - oh yeah, oh well.
I hope your work is all done. All that renovation can be a total nightmare. But when it's finished, the hard work will be all worth it. Good luck!
