MAS Context, the excellent online journal, is sponsoring its first events. I will be attending the event this Friday evening and, schedule permitting, the panel discussion on April 9.
April 2: Out of Context @ Chicago Art Department, 1837 South Halsted Street, Chicago, IL, 6-10 PM. This event will feature work from the journal's first five issues: MORE, EVENTS, WORK, LIVING and from the latest issue, ENERGY, which I'm currently reading. More information is available here.
April 5-9: Exhibition: A Few Zines: Dispatches for the Edge of Architectural Production @ the University of Illinois at Chicago. The exhibit looks at architectural zines from the 1990s, including Lackluster, Infiltration, loud paper, Dodge City Journal, and Monorail. Like their predecessors in the 1960s and '70s, these zines functioned as forums for alternative discourses about architecture, particularly in the context of cultural practices in art, music, politics, and popular culture. The exhibition takes place at the UIC School of Architecture, 845 West Harrison Street, Room 3100 A+A. Gallery hours are 9 AM to 6 PM.
April 9: Publishing Futures: Content, Context, and Emerging Formats @ UIC, 6:00 – 7:30 PM, with a reception to follow. This is the closing panel discussion for A Few Zines. The panelists will consider this question:
With e-book, tablet, and social media technologies rapidly reshaping the publishing landscape, how new and old formats respond? Publishing Futures: Content, Context, and Emerging Formats observes the changes facing art, architecture, and design publishing—blogs, journals, zines, and magazines—and speculates on future models.
Participants include:
- Brendan Crain, Where
- Penelope Dean, University of Illinois, Chicago, Flat Out
- Iker Gil, University of Illinois, Chicago, MAS Context
- Marc Fischer, Temporary Services
- Jimenez Lai, University of Illinois, Chicago, Bureau Spectacular
The discussion will be moderated by Mimi Zeiger of loud paper.
